President Duterte said he was caught between the devil and the deep blue sea in rejecting the appeal of medical frontliners to extend stricter COVID-19 lockdowns (“No more funds; let Filipinos return to work—Duterte to doctors seeking longer lockdown,” 8/11/20).
It was a distressing report to read, especially when Mr. Duterte has continued to allow his favorite appointees to receive tens of millions in monthly “compensation.” Why should it be only the workers in the private sector that must make the sacrifice of receiving paltry paychecks, amid the current pandemic that has pummeled the nation’s economy flat on its back? Glorified “public servants” continue to rake it in while the people (their real bosses) starve.
