Lawyers — kill them or kiss them?

04:02 AM September 24, 2019

On Isabel Escoda’s “Crime and punishment in Cebu” (Opinion, 9/11/19), I am on the vastly majoritarian side that William Shakespeare praised lawyers when Dick the Butcher said in “Henry VI,” “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.”

Plotters wanting to govern or perpetuating themselves in power, such as Ferdinand Marcos, would have been well-advised to consider eliminating the Tañadas, Dioknos, Salongas, Arroyos, et al., to have total control. Lawyers would stubbornly keep asking the foolish questions of the day.

But, another William, Safire, wrote: “The first thing we do, let’s kiss all the lawyers.” Puede rin.
