This refers to the editorial “Disgraceful decision” (6/6/19). I consider it a shameful day for the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to have accepted Ronald Cardema et al.’s petition for last-minute substitution as nominees of the party list group Duterte Youth.
Except for Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon, other commissioners seemingly just dropped all pretense of impartiality by turning a blind eye to the party list laws. They apparently “personalized” their own rules and regulations in this regard. This is Comelec’s contribution to what has become a widespread culture of bending rules in our society.
My final point is a cri de coeur on behalf of those who believe that Comelec’s legitimacy is still reasonably secure: It is your moral obligation to follow the party list laws, and we demand nothing less.
