Vicious treatment of Morales

05:01 AM May 28, 2019

I strongly denounce Hong Kong’s refusal to allow former ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales to enter the territory. The Hong Kong authorities’ treatment of an old lady was vicious and without basis. They couldn’t even provide any reason why they held Morales at the airport for four hours.

The only link was that Morales is a threat since she filed a case against Chinese President Xi Jinping over China’s destruction of the environment through its island-building in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

This incident exposes China’s resolve to go after those who oppose its illegal acts in the WPS. Will the Philippine government allow this to happen again? If this could happen to Morales, how much more to
ordinary Filipinos?

I do appreciate the help the Department of Foreign Affairs extended to Morales even if she’s a known critic of the Duterte administration. But it’s still mind-boggling how a 78-year-old woman could be considered a risk to Hong Kong and China.

The sadder part is how other Filipinos took up the cudgels for China and mocked and bullied Morales. Where is their loyalty?
