Forgive, but not forget

I’m writing about Ciel Habito’s article, “To Japan, with love” (4/12/19).

One cannot wipe away the sickening brutalities of the Japanese with posterior sentiments of kindliness. Forgive, yes, but do not forget, lest we lose our national identity and dignity. The marker in St. Therese Chapel should be restored.

The Japanese at home are gentle, and courteous as subjects. Abroad as masters they behaved like brutes. Why?
