It is nice to read articles about global warming and what people can do to alleviate the situation since it involves everyone.
I commend Dr. Rodel Lasco for bringing up the topic (“Can trees stop global warming?” 3/30/19).
Planting trees is one solution to the problem, but it is not enough as he has said. Our country is one of the first islands hit by typhoons from the Pacific Rim. More supertyphoons like “Yolanda” are expected to occur since global warming is a worldwide problem.
It would help if the age-old habit of burning rice paddies and sugarcane plantations were abolished. Going north through the NLEx, you can smell the smoke and barely see the highway.
The air pollution is so bad, and the air that we breathe has more CO2 than O2. People who have asthma or respiratory conditions should know that. The beauty of Mount Arayat and the greenery are also obscured.
I would include the habit of drivers who park while their engines are running, emitting more pollution and CO2.
Since we are talking of saving lives here, I would include commercial vehicles, particularly big trucks with confusing green lights or bright lights in the rear of the vehicles.
They should be red or orange, for safety’s sake. This goes as well for tricycles with no headlights or rear lights, which their sidecars should have to warn other drivers about the vehicles’ size and the space needed to avoid hitting them.
This is just my two cents on the issue. I suggest the government should have personnel of the Land Transportation Office or the Department of Agrarian Reform go out, do field work and educate the people concerned.
