Respect and admiration, not fear or intimidation

This refers to Richard Heydarian’s column “Why Fidel Ramos was the best” (12/11/18).

During my stint as Aparri municipal councilor, I heard on many occasions President Ramos’ speeches.  He had a clear vision for the country.

He always emphasized teamwork in the realization of that vision.  Many times, he would put zest in his talks with aphorisms like “Kayang kaya, kung sama-sama!”

He sometimes would wear a cap with the word “Teamwork” printed on it.

Indeed, he was a president who motivated, inspired and imbued our people with the values of patriotism and responsibility.

That is why he was able to gain the respect and admiration of our people, not because of fear or intimidation, but because of his competence and exemplary leadership.

In my view, it was his leadership and vision for the nation that made President Fidel Ramos the best president of the country.
