FOI law: a hollow promise

The series of huge questionable disbursements and expenses recently unearthed by the Commission on Audit all the more accentuates the need for a freedom of information (FOI) law.

Such would not have happened if we had an FOI law to safeguard government funds from unscrupulous public officials and their cohorts. But what prevents Congress from enacting a law that
will ensure transparency in government deals and transactions?

The Duterte administration boasts of its commitment to stamp out corruption in government. But it is a hollow promise with no corresponding positive action in sight.

If President Duterte is really determined and sincere in bringing about good and honest governance, why doesn’t he certify the FOI bill?

As long as the President continues this irresponsible leadership, and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the discredited former president, remains at the helm of the House of Representatives, we can kiss an FOI law goodbye.

I would be very happy to be proven wrong.
