Since working abroad has become part of our Filipino culture, it is time for greater public discussion and education on the impact of working overseas and families getting separated as a result.
It is important that, when choosing to work outside the Philippines, parents are made aware of the impact this will have on their children’s self-esteem and development.
The government has the responsibility to provide a platform to prepare families of overseas workers for the possible consequences.
The government needs to recognize that, while OFWs have been the fairy godmothers of the economy, the dark side of the fairy tale remains unrecognized.
