The editorial, “The tribune” (8/3/18), was wishing for the moon! It wondered: “Will the new Ombudsman, former Supreme Court Justice Samuel Martires, live up to the Morales standard?”
Martires’ demeanor at the height of the unconstitutional quo warranto proceedings against ousted chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno speaks volumes of the stuff he is made of.
As President Duterte’s first and favorite appointee to the highest court of the land, Martires demonstrated that he could be the attack dog any time his master would call upon him to do so.
The President had called Sereno his “enemy.”
In the Supreme Court, Martires minced no words in questioning her sanity — because of her “pervasive belief in God,” the same god Mr. Duterte called “stupid”!
Should the nation expect more justices like him to be appointed soon by Mr. Duterte to dominate and run the biggest circus in town?
Had the late vice president Emmanuel Pelaez lived to this day, he would have asked again: “What is happening to our country?”
