Supreme Court justices are looked up to as erudite, learned, almost infallible. Any decision rendered by them is supposed to have passed judicious and prudent scrutiny such that people simply have to accept its wisdom hook, line and sinker.
However, from the looks of it, the decision on the quo
warranto petition against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno completely obliterates instead of upholds the magistrates’ lofty appellation.
This is the first time in recent memory that a high court decision is so reviled that not only the legal profession but also the cross-section of the community has something to say against it.
Just like any human being, magistrates need some introspection—to get the real feel of the public sense. A change of tact is therefore in order. It will not at all demean their offices, rather it will exalt them.
