I am a Canadian married to a Filipino and I have been living here in Palawan for six years. I was so mesmerized by the natural beauty of Palawan and overwhelmed by the hospitality of Palaweños. My beloved wife and I then decided to settle here.
Palawan doesn’t deserve to be called a “problem area” as what presidential spokesperson Harry Roque did. In the past six years since settling here, I did not experience any atrocities committed by terrorist groups.
Yes, we have heard of incidents involving the New People’s Army in different areas of Palawan, but authorities have assured residents and tourists that they will maintain peace and security in the area.
Palawan is such a beautiful paradise where tourists and locals can see the beauty of El Nido, Coron, and the Underground River in Puerto Princesa listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
I condemn Secretary Roque’s statement. Authorities are actively performing their duty in keeping Palawan safe. The people in the community are cooperating to keep the island safe from any threat.
Tagging Palawan as a “problem area” is a mistake. Roque should be careful with what he says.
