Same problems, same solutions

These discussions on rice self-sufficiency are just mere political self-interest that will continue to keep our farmers poor (“Debate on rice strategy continues,” Business, 2/2/18). They completely miss the point on the urgent necessity to address farmers’ income.

The 1950s political policy of rice self-sufficiency at all cost has been detrimental to our farmers’ economic stature.

Furthermore, “experts” who talk about the National Food Authority’s role are irresponsible and incompetent. They disregard the agency’s legal mandate, purpose and accountability.

The truth is, the government’s agricultural focus, production policies and disregard for farmers’ income make up the root of the problem.
