What appeals to us bespeaks stuff we’re made of. Treasure movies don’t do well in the box office as proven once again in the recently concluded Metro Manila Film Festival.
If “Ang Larawan” is a good entry film, as it truly is, having won the Best Picture award, and we don’t buy it — then what are we?
Filipino mania for screen entertainment reflects our predicament as a people. No wonder, we normally and generally end up electing wrong candidates every election.
Indeed our heroes and martyrs have a long, long way to go, if there remains a way, to educate the moron in all of us.
But what about theaters that rejected “Ang Larawan” and those that trashed the same film after only one or two days of screening due to greed? I mean, what do these cinemas worship other than profit?
“Ang Larawan” mirrors numerous painful realities about us, Filipinos. Aren’t we a nation that values life? Whether in movies or elections, the results would show. Face it.
