I agree with President Duterte that old jeepneys should be scrapped and replaced by new modern public utility vehicles that do not pollute the air and endanger passengers.
Owning and driving jeepneys is not a “human right.” It is a privilege, a franchise given by the government with certain guidelines, conditions and following ordinances and laws.
It takes a lot of political will and capital for a president to go against the jeepney operators. President Duterte is demonstrating this, something that his predecessors did not have the balls to do.
For decades, the jeepney
operators have ruled the streets. During this time, they’ve made enough money to modernize their fleet. Like greedy bastards, they have not—so I cannot sympathize with their fake plight now.
