Senators should be ashamed of themselves for conducting another unconstitutional “investigation.”
Their investigation of Horacio “Atio” Castillo III’s hazing death is not necessary. All the senators need to do is to study past hazing deaths, wait for the results of the NBI’s investigation and use their collective common sense.
They should not sensationalize Castillo’s death in front of free nationwide TV — another “investigation” in aid of grandstanding and titillation!
To strengthen the present antihazing law, the following should be done:
1) Make punishments — civil, administrative and criminal — so severe and harsh to stop hazing deaths and injuries.
2) Punishment should apply to members of the frat, its board, alumni and school involved. (For example: impose a P10-million fine on UST; law dean Nilo Divina should be held liable. If they did not know about it, they should have; if they knew, they should have stopped it.)
3) Conduct initiation rites on the school stage—like graduation.
4) Declare a frat (or club) involved illegal and permanently disbanded.
I’m sure people’s common sense can come up with other measures.
