On the way back to our hotel in Makati via Uber after visiting the art galleries in SM Megamall, we took the inner route, thus avoiding Edsa’s gridlock.
I think Makati is a microcosm of the best and the worst of Philippine cities where the chasm that divides the super rich and the very poor is so disparate that one marvels at the resilience of the poor who literally live on sidewalks.
The Binays, whose family dynasty has ruled Makati for years passing the torch like a God-given right from father to mother to son and now to daughter, should be held accountable.
It is true justice that the father-mother-son now face trial for plunder but that is their lesser crime. Their more serious crime is leaving the majority of Makati residents poor while enriching themselves.
And the blame should be justly shared by the oligarchs of Makati who live in gated subdivisions and in high-rise condominiums while the rest of their countrymen wallow in abject poverty and misery.
Thank goodness we don’t have sights like those in Davao.
