A challenge to teachers

I read Dr. Leonardo Leonidas’ commentary (“Creativity to compete globally,” Opinion, 2/15/17) on innovative teaching and learning in the United States and I couldn’t agree more, and I hope to see the same develop in the Philippine educational system. Likewise, I am praying that our education leaders will come to realize that innovation is the new normal in our time.

I am a part-time instructor in a state university in Bataan, teaching in the College of Education, I believe innovation should be incorporated in the way we teach our learners. However, not all education leaders are receptive and welcoming of innovation. This is a challenge, especially for teachers who implement the curriculum but are not involved in curriculum development.

I hope that we will have more time to discuss things about education in the country. At 36, I dream of putting up a foundation that will help learners and teachers to achieve the goal of education inside the classroom—one that is geared towards learner autonomy and learner empowerment.

I thank Dr. Leonidas for sharing his thoughts.
