Amen to Rejinel Gamboa Valencia’s letter (“Pacquiao using Bible to suit his political agenda?,” Opinion, 1/25/17).
Pacquiao quotes the Bible without thinking/elaborating on how the quote applies to the situation he’s referring it to. But come to think of it, what can you expect? Wasn’t he quoted in the news at one time replying (when asked while running for the Senate if it wouldn’t be hard to learn the duties of a senator) with something like, it wouldn’t be hard because he can memorize the Bible?
Talk about plain common sense.
And I wouldn’t be surprised, either, if someday, he becomes the president of the Philippines as Mr. Duterte recently said. There are plenty enough ignorant voters in the Philippines who would go and vote for a celebrity (and Pacquiao is a big one!) to any government position without thinking for themselves whether that celebrity is really qualified—brain-wise and otherwise—for the position he/she is running for. Is it any wonder that the government if full of not only corrupt but also inept and fumbling clowns?
As a boxer, Pacquiao is probably the greatest thing that ever happened in Philippine sports. His superb accomplishments in the ring have given the whole country a lot of reasons to admire and be so proud of him. In that field where he excels is where Pacquiao should stay, and definitely NOT in politics where he is clearly not cut-out for.
