‘Creating’ loving families in school

This is to express my appreciation of the Inquirer for running the hopeful letter of Dr. Romario Ramos (“Add parenting to the curriculum” (Opinion, 1/7/17). Ramos proposes a subject on good parenting in schools, a very sensible suggestion.

Parenting topics will prepare students for their more important future roles as responsible citizens. They will teach the children such virtues as diligence, discipline, generosity, chastity, respectfulness and a cheerful spirit of service. Such knowledge will make for a society made up of virtuous Filipino families through generations.

Parenting subjects will also help solve teenage pregnancies. Knowing the tools to build a happy family, teenagers will realize that begetting babies entails serious responsibilities. They will work to provide for their children’s education and proper upbringing. Thus, they will feel the need to finish school themselves, and earn a living first before they start a family.

Equipped with the knowledge of good parenting, the young and adult alike will strive to avoid “unwanted pregnancies.” Married couples certainly want every child of theirs to be a fruit of their unconditional love for each other and to be nurtured with loving sacrifice and care within a warm, assuring family environment.
