I cannot believe that an institution like the Philippine Daily Inquirer can write such a seemingly angry, immature and fallacious editorial. (“Elitism,” Philippine Daily Inquirer, 9/25/08)
First of all, it seems to have forgotten one other body of readers: us, the students. The Philippine Daily Inquirer basically labeled the entire studentry of De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University as a “perfumed set” and as scalpers.
How dare the Philippine Daily Inquirer call the 20,000 students of La Salle, the 10,000 students of Ateneo by such derogatory terms! All of this is because probably you did not get free tickets from the UAAP. Who gave the Philippine Daily Inquirer the right to write about us in such a way?
The editorial defensively stated that in sports there should be a spirit of fairness and therefore tickets should be distributed equally. Granted, that is a valid argument, but for the editor to express his/her frustrations in a “national article” and in the process taint our name shows its immaturity. Especially when the editorial sounds like he/she did not get a ticket.
The editorial was directed mainly at Araneta Center? Does that matter? The point is 30,000 students — and who knows how many alumni — are now the “perfumed set.” Just because some rich people come from these schools does not mean all people in these schools are rich. The Philippine Daily Inquirer insulted us all. The Inquirer is a disappointment.

Although it may surprise the letter writer, Philippine Daily Inquirer editors probably can afford to pay P55 for a bleacher ticket. The problem is that they don’t have Ateneo or La Salle IDs. Nobody has explained why that is a necessary precondition to watching the games. By the way, very few people would feel insulted at being called — or mistaken to be — rich. — Editor
