MANILA, Philippines—Taiwanese aces Chang Pei-wei and Chang Yu-lung went undefeated in six matches after two days of qualifying to make it to the main draw Wednesday of the rich, first-ever World 10-Ball Championships.

Pei broke out of a 6-all tie with Filipino Victor Arpilleda to win the final three racks for a 9-6 decision, while Yu had an easier time against countryman Lee Po-hsien, 9-4, as both posted perfect 6-0 records.

The two joined Taiwanese compatriots Wu Chia-ching, the former World 9-Ball champion, and Ko Pin-yi in the $400,000 event that gets going Monday at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.

The qualifying event going on at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City will complete the final lineup of the 128-man main draw.

Taiwan now has a total of nine players as the biggest Asian delegation with host Philippines having eight, led by former Asian Games champion Antonio Gabica and Marlon Manalo.

Jeffrey De Luna also made the tournament proper together with veteran journeyman Edgar Acaba, Mario Tolentino, Elmer Kalaquian, Elvis Calasang and teenage wonder Jericho Banares.

Conspicuously missing are the country’s top guns including world No.1 Denis Orcollo, former world 9-ball champions Efren (Bata) Reyes, Alex Pagulayan and Ronnie Alcano and the eminent Francisco (Django) Bustamante.

All are members of the breakaway Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP) formed last February.

The World 10-Ball is held under the auspices of Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines with Raya Sports as promoter.

Pei, best remembered for finishing second to Pagulayan in the 2004 WPC 9-Ball, made the most out of an Arpilleda miss on the No. 1 ball in the 13th frame, promptly cleaning up the table before winning the next three to advance.

Yu, meanwhile, scored victories over Jean Berille, 7-3; Alfred Triestanto, 7-4; Jim Burt, 7-4; Leonardo Didal, 7-5; and Lu Hui Chan, 7-6, before that convincing triumph over Lee. Musong R. Castillo
