LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Wrong target

Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 06:43:00 05/10/2008

The Vatican letter criticizing the partnership of Gawad Kalinga (GK) with pharmaceutical companies that have interests in promoting artificial family planning is completely hypocritical. To put it simply, the Catholic Church is being rendered useless by the GK projects. For decades, the Church closed its eyes to unabated poverty caused mainly by corruption in government and, yes, by overpopulation.

To the bishops who live in luxury, I say, go out into slum areas sans your pompous robes, and experience the life of the poor.

Instead of going after GK, why don’t the bishops set their eyes on political leaders who continue to formulate policies that are beneficial only to them and their ilk, even at the expense of the suffering poor?
