Sadness and hope in new SC choice

/ 08:54 PM September 10, 2012

I am still grieving over the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona, and the appointment of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno did not lessen my sadness. Not until I learned that our new Chief Justice’s birthday is the same as that of our former First Lady Imelda Marcos.

I always liked Mrs. Marcos for her creative energy and quest for beauty. Power just overwhelmed her and she overdid what was best for our country. I am just hoping that Chief Justice Sereno would learn from the mistakes of our former first lady and use her legal position to better our judiciary and sustain the rule of law.

Of course, her path will not be easy for the seed of rejection President Aquino has planted in the judiciary has now grown into the hearts of many. It is then only natural that, being the new Chief Justice, she will meet defiance from other members of the Supreme Court. I do wish her luck and I hope that she will prove to be not only the answer to the trusting heart of President Aquino but also the right person to keep our judicial system intact.
