‘San Pedro Calungsod’

Almost a dozen years after he was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2000, Blessed Pedro Calungsod is set to become the second Filipino saint after San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila. Through a unanimous vote, the cardinal-members of the Holy See’s Sacred Congregation for the Cause of Saints determined that the 2002 recovery of a woman, who had been clinically dead for two hours, was a miracle attributed to the intercession of Calungsod, to whom her doctor had reportedly prayed. Now, Beato (Blessed) Pedro Calungsod will soon be “San Pedro Calungsod.”

What’s the difference between a Blessed and a Saint? The Spanish Dominican historian Fr. Fidel Villarroel, the most prolific saint-maker in the Philippines who did the “positio” or historical legwork to have Lorenzo Ruiz canonized, explains that beatification is “a declaration of the Church that a dead person, judging from his or her heroic life, is proposed to Christians for local veneration or limited cult as a model of virtuous living and as an intercessor and advocate for them before God.” While a miracle is needed to be attributed to a person who died naturally and is proposed for beatification, no such miracle is needed for a martyr. Martyrdom automatically elects the martyr to the beatitude of heaven. Beatification is expected to lead to canonization, in which the cult of the blessed is widened so as to include the universal Church. Therefore canonization means a wider veneration for Calungsod.

Notwithstanding the prospects for a wider—and more universal—veneration for Calungsod, we should not miss out on the fact that he hailed from the local, from the Visayas, in fact, where three provinces and ethnic groups claim him as their own—Cebu, Bohol and Iloilo.

It is only right for the Visayas to finally have a canonized saint; after all, Christianity is older there than in Manila by nearly half a century. The head start was provided in 1521 when Humabon and his people welcomed Magellan and the Spaniards and underwent Christian baptism; his wife was re-christened after Queen Juana of Spain and received for a gift the image of the Holy Infant of Jesus—the Santo Niño. What happened between the time the remnants of Magellan’s fleet left to return to Spain in what became the first circumnavigation of the globe and the time the Spaniards, led by Legazpi, came back to the Philippines in 1565 is what Nick Joaquin calls as “the most tantalizing period in Philippine history.” Upon the Spaniards’ return, they found the image of the Santo Niño in an altar among several anitos, perhaps the first recorded evidence of folk Catholicism.

Today the Santo Niño of Cebu, together with the Santo Rosario of Peñafrancia, La Naval de Manila and Manaoag shrines, is the biggest Catholic devotion in the Philippines. The fact that the devotion has spread from Cebu to Manila (witness the Santo Niño feasts every January in Tondo and Pandacan) should indicate the catholicity of popular Catholic liturgy and religious pilgrimage.

Too often, Catholic feasts have been derided by liberals and secularists as a waste of time and resources. But Joaquin and another National Artist for Literature, the late Alejandro Roces, defended the fiesta as an “accurate barometer of progress” and the engine for nation-building. Fiestas, after all, celebrate the milestones in a community. “With births, marriages and deaths recorded, Filipinos began to see themselves as historical beings,” Roces writes. “The town was the nation in embryo. This explains why the Filipino word of town, ‘bayan,’ is also the word for nation. The Filipino saw his nation as just an expansion of his hometown . . .” Similarly, Europe became Europe because of the ancient annual great pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela of Spain.

The examples of Calungsod and Lorenzo Ruiz should indicate that the “hometown” has grown to embrace as well the globe. Both of them earned the palm of martyrdom abroad—the latter in Japan, the former in what’s now Guam. They may as well have been the first Filipino OFWs! And although they died with clerics (Calungsod with the Jesuit Fr. Diego Luis de San Vitores, and Lorenzo with several Dominican friars), they were laymen, an indication of how Christianity had really taken root among the Filipinos. Their martyrdom having sown and watered the seed of Christianity elsewhere, they’re veritable ambassadors and embodiments of the catholicity of the Catholic faith. They’re the Philippine Church’s gifts to universal humanity. They make us proud to be Filipinos and Christians.

“In order to be part of the totalitarian movement, it is not necessary to wear a uniform or carry a club or a whip. It is only necessary to wish for your own subjection, and to delight in the subjection of others. What is a totalitarian system if not one where the abject glorification of the perfect leader is matched by the surrender of all privacy and individuality, especially in matters sexual, and in denunciation and punishment– for their own good —of those who transgress?” —Hitchens (god is not Great)

Dont you think hindi namin alam yan? Of course we pray directly to God. You ask the intercession of the saints because each saint has causes. You know, this will be an unending discussion. I’ve been practising and studying catholicism for the longest time. Hindi ko maeexplain sayo fully and comprehensively dito.

But using your premise about fixers, kung sinasabi mong magdasal kami directly sa Diyos, bakit sa lLTO e kailangan mo pang gumamit ng fixer e pwede ka nman lumapit sa head or sa LTO chief.

I hope you get my point. But if you dont want to believe ok lang. Walang pumipilit sayo na maniwala ka.

this is precisely my point that’s why I used it as an example, if you ponder on your answer, you will see that have agreed with me on that premise, why pray to the saints when you can pray to god directly, whatever cause the saints have, God is more powerful than them, omnipotent as he is, saints are superflous if you intend to pray to them, which is against the Bible by the way, as God is the jealous type. “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;” Not that I’m into religion as a whole because religions are full of contradiction in regards to it’s teaching and it practises.

Religion is thirsty work, I think I’ll go have a drink.

      • taga_ilog

or further yet bakit kailangan ng religion, since you’re so intent in defending it. Has it done anything to you in terms of personality, maturity and finacial stability? Have you prayed to St. Whatchamacallit for guidance and has he given it to you? Why not pray for money to drop from the sky ( hindi coins please) just like it rained manna from heaven during the exile of the jews in the desert,If it happened in the bible, why won’t it happen now? Hindi ba toto ang nasa bibliya? Or does it mean na mas malakas ng mga jews sa DIyos kesa sa pinoys in the ONLY CHRISTIAN  COUNTRY IN ASIA? maybe then mawawala na ang mahirap sa pilipinas.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YGUVDEUJTH47NXLOEMCOSCMGIU Anonymous

      • taga_ilog

hmmm.. hindi naman, nasa middle class lang, may konti ipon sa bangko, me sarili bahay at lupa, me sarili sasakyan. but I did not attribute these things to god being good to me,.another point is, wala akong issues regarding sa mga nakakahawang sakit, leprosy being easy to cure nowadays. ang pagpapaligo ng may ketong to me it nothing significant, I have devoted my time to charity works once in a while but not out of religious reasons but out of compassion to others.

for three decades i was just like you, searching the real God. ridiculing Catholic .practices of kneeling before a statue, idols we always call it. Nakakasawa, paulit ulit. We do that only to catholics, but not to the Muslims, Hindus, Buddhist, jews.

And furthermore, we ate at fiesta, celebrate valentines and prepare gifts for Christmas.

At the end your body will be buried at the Catholic cemetery.

      • taga_ilog

I don’t have issues with catholic practises being a catholic myself. have you read any of my comments ridiculing saints? what I have done though is to ask why there is a need for saints or religion, marunong naman akong gumalang sa paniniwala ng iba, if the PDI writes up an article regarding islam, buddhism etc, etc, I would have done the same, ask, if anyone would care to answer them Maybe Jomex will be posting snips from his book, it so happened that PDI made an article regarding a possible catholic saint thus I commented and posted my question and ideas.

I don’t know if you’ll believe me, but I never celebrated christmas, nor fiestas(to the chagrin of my relative who happened to be catholics, my wife is always mortified that I don’t give her flowers during valentine’s and in case I die, I will not be buried in a catholic cemetery as i have a plot in a memorial park, not in the public cemetery owned by the church,so my family won’t have to bother with the burial rites, which costs by the way (I have doubts whether they would follow my wish not to be given the burial rites),  just a nice simple tombstone would be nice and without the crosses please.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YGUVDEUJTH47NXLOEMCOSCMGIU Anonymous

Pag nag comment ako it would take decades hindi pa tayo nagkakasundo. Sabi mo katoliko ka? i think it is your fault why you are asking those questions. i will not fall into your trap. you have to search it yourself, not me telling you on that…ikaw ang may problema eh, ikaw ang nagtatanong eh.

      • taga_ilog

okay, kailangan ko pala mag-soul-searching… but thanks anyway for your time.

        Dear Taga-ilog

I am quite amussed with the conversation who had with jaycee. It seems to me that you were pointing your arguments on a reasonble grounds, while its true what Jaycee said, that the Theology (Catholic) about saints could not be explained further in this blog, but that does not mean its that complicated. You see, in order to understand  something, one should be open in receiveing such explation.

I want to try to explain to you the Catholic Church´s view with regard to the Saints.

The Catholic Doctrine teaches that there exists 3 disposistion of church, namely, the Triumphant Church, the militant church and the Suffering Church. The triumphant church are composed of those persons who have died and now enjoying being with God. The Militant church composed of those persons who are still here on earth while the Suffering Churc is composed of those who are in purgatory and are under process of purification in order to be with God.

There is a connection which exists in this 3 dimesions, the Triumphant Church are praying for those who are in the Militant church and suffering church. The militant church prays for those who are in suffering church, and those who are in the suffering church, after being purified and go up to heaven, will be member of the triumphant church and thus, will be interceding for those who are in the militant church.

The Saints are those persons who belong to the Triumphant church since they are enjoying the presence of God. The Catholic Doctrine affrims that those who have died and are now in heaven are now saints. Some o f these persons are named saints, llike in the case of  the soon St. Pedro Calungsod, while others are unknown to the Church but nonetheless are still saints.

The saints are both models and intercessors to God. They serve as model of how a christian should practice virtue and thus aim to love ,serve and obey God. The are intercessors to God. while its true that one could pray to God directly, its also good to think, that someone up there are already interceeding for you.

Let us put it like this, when someone asks me a favor to pray for him or her, the reason he or she asks me such help is that he or she believes that if one or two or more are praying to God about her request, then most probably it will be granted unto him. The english quotation calls it “storm the heaven with prayer”. the same is applied to the intercession of the Saints, they are “storming the heaven with prayers” for us. We pray directly to God and then they too interceed for the same intention.

I actually could not use the “LTO fixer” relationship with the one who are trying to get driver licesence. For in this kind of relationship, it is only the fixer who works directly in the name of the person. whereas, in the intercession of the saints, both the saint and the person are working or praying or the same request.

As regard to the seemingly contradictions about the religion, I am not sure if what you mean religion you intend to say Catholic. However, one could only see contradiction on Catholic teaching if one does not posses certainty of understanding regarding each teaching of the Catholic Church.

I inteded to let you know who we, Catholics, believe in the intercession of the Saints.

Hmm, after all-saints day, a fitting way to start my day. Thanks a lot for the info. I admit that I do not understand any of these doctrines, reading your explanation, makes it more difficult for me to understand. You’re right, one should be open to explanations such as these. Even I have had religion in our school back in the day, it was a ho-hum subject for me. But, “live and let live “as they say. Good morning to you and your family bro and thanks
